Cleaning a terracotta bong is a bit different from cleaning glass because clay is porous. Since it “breathes,” you want to avoid harsh chemicals that could leave a nasty aftertaste.
Here is a friendly, step-by-step guide to keeping your piece fresh and hitting smooth!
1. The “Shake & Shine” (Alcohol & Salt)
This is the most popular method for a deep clean. The alcohol dissolves the resin, and the salt acts as a tiny scrub brush.
– What you need: 91% Isopropyl alcohol and coarse salt (like sea salt or Epsom salt).
– The Process: Pour the alcohol and a few tablespoons of salt into the bong. Plug the holes with your hands (or some paper towels) and give it a firm but careful shake for a few minutes.
– Pro Tip: If your piece is extra grimy, let it soak in the mixture for 30 minutes before shaking.
2. The Natural Route (Vinegar & Baking Soda)
If you prefer to keep things eco-friendly and “kitchen-safe,” this combo works wonders on odors.
– The Process: Mix warm water with white vinegar and a spoonful of baking soda. It will fizz up—that’s the cleaning power at work! Use a pipe cleaner or a bottle brush to scrub the internal walls.
3. The Warm Water Simmer
Since terracotta is fired earth, it handles heat well.
– The Process: Place your piece in a pot of room-temperature water and slowly bring it to a light simmer (not a rolling boil). This loosens up the stubborn resin.
– Safety First: Always let the water cool down naturally before taking the piece out. Drastic temperature changes can cause the clay to crack.

Unglazed clay will soak up the floral scent of Dawn or Palmolive. Unless you want your next hit to taste like "Mountain Spring," stick to alcohol or vinegar.
Dry it Out
After rinsing thoroughly with warm water, let your piece air dry completely in a well-ventilated spot. This prevents any musty smells from trapped moisture.
